World Fantasy Summary

It was a great weekend at World Fantasy. I got to hear some great writers read like Andy Duncan, Greg Bechtel, and Kathleen Ann Goonan. I got to catch up with some friends like David Coe. I had some great dinners and learned a lot about things I never even know I wanted to learn about. That’s the fun thing about a conference. If you’re not careful, you may learn something.

We did get rerouted through Atlanta on our way home, but at least we got home. And now I have to stop writing because Hector, my cat, is still mad at me and wants me to hold him.

World Fantasy Update

I’ve had a good time so far at World Fantasy. Today started off with some unusual conversation in the hotel lobby. The topics ranged from field dressing a squirrel, a penis museum, and a freelance frog fluffer.  I went to hear Patricia McKillip and it was an excellent reading. I gave a reading that went very well. I had a nice dinner with author David Coe and Stephen Leigh and some others. Steve and I went to the mass autograph signing and I sold a few books. All in all, a good day.

World Fantasy Convention

I will be heading off to the World Fantasy Convention tomorrow. On Friday, I will be giving a reading between 2:30 and 3:00 in the Arlington Room. I will also participate in the author signing on Friday night. Don’t have a book? Don’t worry, I do. 🙂 I’ll be happy to sell you one! 🙂

Happy Halloween!

Today’s micro-fiction:

Irwin had never understood the phrase “as fun as a barrel full of monkeys.” However, nothing livened up a family party like a bottle of glue and a basket full of scorpions.

I hope  you have enjoyed the stories this week and thanks to those of you who have added your own!

I have a full length horror story titled “Bloodsuckers” in my story collection. There’s other good stories in there too, of course. 🙂

Halloween Eve’s story

The cold, damp October evening made Helen think of her mother. It was in weather like this that her mother used to take her by the hand and go with her house to house, trick or treating. Helen put her hands in her pocket and relaxed, glad to feel her mother’s hand in hers once again.

Today’s micro story

The spider, big and brown, hung from a web from the rearview mirror. Devon shuddered and took the shop vac he kept in the garage and turned it on the spider, sucking it into die among the dust. Devon climbed into the car and shut the door. There’s nothing worse than a spider in the car, he thought. That’s when he heard the hiss and rattle come from under his seat.

For Halloween: Micro-horror

If you’ve looked through the archives, you will see that I have a post on two-sentence horror stories. The rest of this week, I will post more micro-horror (though some may be longer than two sentences). If you would like to write your own in the comments, please feel free!

She liked it when she saw a car with the bumper sticker “You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.” She always took them up on the challenge.

Story Tease :)

I got some good news last week. My short story “Postcards from Andros” is going to be included in Unconventional Fantasy, A Celebration of Forty Years of the World Fantasy Convention. This will be given away to attendees of the World Fantasy Convention in Washington D.C. in November. I will be in attendance as well.

The story is also in my collection In Love and Water and Other Stories so you don’t have to wait. You can buy the book now and read the whole thing plus my other stories. 😉

Here’s a tease of “Postcards”

July 7, 1994
Hey.
So, last night, I heard this woman say, “What’s wrong with a man with a small
penis?” and sorry, but I thought of you. Hehe. I remembered how anxious you were the
first night we were together. Lucky for you, I’m not a size queen!
Of course, everything here on Andros reminds me of you. I walked past an olive
grove and thought of you. I ate pastitsio for lunch and thought of you. I waded in the
Aegean and thought of you.
Wishing you were here.
